Most people look at charitable giving as something they “wish” they could do or as something that is “nice for some people”. Rarely, if ever in passing conversation do I hear giving to be considered any fun. Well, I am here to show that giving is not only fun, but also a major component in having a Healthy Financial Plan.
When we give, we need to be supporting organizations and causes that we have a passion for. Whether you give locally, nationally, or globally, familiarize yourself with the organization and have an idea of what your money will help accomplish. There are a lot of scams out there and finding out that 90% of your money is going to cover administration costs and only 10% to your cause is not ideal.
Also remember to give consistently. Giving what you have left over at the end of the month does not work because there usually isn’t anything left over at the end of the month. If you do not have a spot designated for giving, you will not give. Instead, make it one of the first things you do monthly. We recommend when coaching people on how to make a budget, to make the very first line of your budget for giving. By making giving a priority, you will develop a habit that will make you want to give even more.
As you continue to build wealth by following a financial plan, your giving will increase also. After reading some quotes about the billionaire pledge I was deeply encouraged and wondered myself how amazing that would feel to be able to give like that someday. By starting today, no matter how small or big you give, you can start to experience the joy of giving.
You can also give in more ways then just your money. By giving your time, knowledge, or services, you can also help someone who is need. So wherever you are financially start giving today, and experience the thrill of giving.
