Friday Financial Tidbit: Giving today, not just tomorrow

This coming Monday we will be releasing the last podcast in a series on the three things we do with money.  The focus of this podcast will be giving.  It is kind of funny that we are doing giving last because most of the time when we think of giving we view it as something we will do later when we have more time, money, resources, etc.  The truth, though, is that giving is not something you do just later, but rather something you want to do today.

If you look at our budget forms you will notice that giving is the first thing listed after we take care of our four walls.  That is on purpose because when we start to give it frees us to do better things with money since it takes the focus off of ourselves and instead puts it on family, friends, and others in need.

Giving is not just about the money.  You can give your time and resources to help someone in need.  The best thing about giving our time is that we all can do it, no matter how big our bank account is, we all have 24 hours in a day.  Of course we always say we are busy but it never ceases to amaze me how much time I can have if I turn off the TV for a weekend or two.

We can always have an excuse to give later rather than now.  If you are waiting to give when you have more money you will probably never have enough to give.  The kids will never be old enough and will always take so much time that you will never be able to volunteer on a Saturday morning.  The key to giving now is just do it!  It might not be the amount you want to give or the time to volunteer, but you have to start somewhere and build up to it.  So what are you waiting for?  Experience the joy of giving today and start to enrich your and your family’s life.

How has giving now impacted your life?  Please leave a comment below.
