How much time do you spend on your finances?

How much time a month do you spend on your personal finances? Your answer to that question will tell you a lot about how well you are doing with your personal finances. No, you do not have to spend hours upon hours a day looking at mutual fund statements or going through your budget line by line. But you do need to care and put forth the effort needed to win with money.

There is no set rule on how many hours a month you need to put in, but if you spent more time planning your latest vacation then you did going over your finances last month then that might be a problem. Likewise if you know more about your fantasy football team then where your money is going each month, it might be wise to spend some more time learning about your finances.

We all have to start somewhere, so it is more important that you do start caring then how many hours you put in. Most of us are busy, I know, but it is very important that you create the time. A recent survey found that the average American watches about 150 hours of Television in a month! Imagine what would happen if you just cut out an hour of TV watching each week and instead invested that time in your personal finances. You would start to take control of your finances and improve your spending habits. In addition, you would be able to reach goals that you would otherwise think are impossible to reach. Also, if you are married, the increased communication with your spouse will do wonders not only for your finances but for your marriage as well.

Spending time on your finances is not a matter of if you do it, but how you make the time to do it. Winning with money just does not happen by luck. You have to spend the time to plan how you will win with money. So how much time do you spend a month on your finances? Please leave a comment below.

Good points Jon. Success in personal finance often comes down to time management and prioritization. Well said.

Thanks Matt, it’s amazing to me how we say we want to do better with our finances, but yet we never create the time to sit down and go over them. We always say we are too busy, but to me it is all about priority. If you make your finances a prioritity, you will do well financially. If you don’t, then you won’t do so well.
